Introduction

There are all kinds of factors that go into how well your website is performing on Google or a similar search engine. You probably already know a little about SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. You might be looking to integrate certain keywords into your website to make sure you pop up for users searching for these key terms. But there are a few other things that impact your Google ranking that you might not be considering.

For instance, did you know that the amount of time it takes for a web page to load can impact its Google performance? That's right! A slow web page can rank lower on Google, and for the users who do find it, they might get impatient waiting for it to load. So, how can you know if this is happening on your website? By using Semalt's Page Speed Analyzer tool.

What is Semalt?

Semalt is a full-scale digital agency that has assisted clients from around the world with their websites' SEO performance. Our most popular SEO services include our revolutionary Dedicated SEO Dashboard, AutoSEO, FullSEO, and E-Commerce SEO. Semalt also offers additional services such as SSL and API to give you a broad look into your website's performance and provide a well-rounded catalog of digital offerings.

What is the Page Speed Analyzer?

Our Page Speed Analyzer is exactly what it sounds like: enter your web page's URL, and we'll tell you how long it takes to load on a standard desktop or laptop or on a mobile device. All you have to do to get started is enter your website's URL. Pictured below is the view you'll get before you begin.

Once you've entered your URL, our tool goes to work. You'll be presented with a full report on your page load time for both desktop and mobile, ranking your site with a score out of 100 for both. A score of 90-100 is considered good, 50-89 is considered average, and 0-49 is considered extremely low. You'll also get to see how many seconds it took for your page to load, the number of audits that your page successfully passed, and the number of errors to fix. Pictured below is an example of these figures.

As you continue to scroll, you'll be able to see your webpage loading emulation, errors to fix, and successful audits. You'll want to pay particular attention to the Errors to Fix page; these are the places where you can make improvements to your site and increase your overall score! Not only will you be presented with the errors themselves, but in many cases, you'll also be told how much load time could be saved if you made the necessary changes.

Why is Page Speed Important?

Page speed is more important for your SEO ranking than many people realize. First, it's vital to have a quick-loading page simply from a user perspective. The fact of the matter is that people are impatient, and that's especially true on the internet. Remember back in the early days of the internet when we had to wait 30 seconds or even full minutes for a web page to load? Thankfully, those days are over, but it means that users want their pages to load immediately.

If your page takes longer than a few seconds to load, there's a good chance that that user will click away and go to your competitor's site. One study indicated that the average online shopper expects a web page to load in just two seconds, and if it takes more than three seconds, 40% of shoppers will leave the page! You don't want to miss out on those precious conversions just because your website is taking a while to load.

Improving your page speed can lead to better SEO results in more ways than one. As we just covered, a faster page loading speed will prevent users from abandoning that web page to head back to the search results. The amount of time a user spends on your page before returning to Google is called dwell time, and if you have a low dwell time, your SEO ranking will decrease. Page speed also impacts your bounce rate; when users move from page to page on your site very quickly, your bounce rate goes up, which can make your SEO ranking go down.
